What if your area had the same deforestation rate as the Amazon Forest?
The destruction of the Amazon rainforest has devastating implications for biodiversity, as it is home to an estimated 10% of the world’s known species. Deforestation disrupts ecosystems, leading to habitat loss, species extinction, and disruption of crucial ecological processes. Moreover, the Amazon’s role as a carbon sink is compromised, exacerbating climate change by releasing stored carbon into the atmosphere and reducing the forest’s capacity to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions.
According to INPE, a satellite monitoring agency, in the first 22 days of July more than 1260 square kilometers of the Amazon have been deforested. Here you can see that destruction rate applied to any place in the world in real time.
